Bikes in FlagstaffHey all, I'm doing the July term with CREC, and I'm planning on using a bike for pretty much all of my transportation. How much bike theft is there in Flagstaff? I'm in Brooklyn right now, and here you need a $100 kryptonite chain-link lock to keep your frame from getting jacked. And even the chain-links don't deter the sad bunch who ganks seats and handelbars. What do bikers out there use to keep their stuff secure? Also, is the road to the shop paved? If not, is accessible via road bike? Thanks, Posted by Todd at 09:17:34 on 28 June 2007.

Bike commuting
Hey, Todd-
I ride to work pretty much every day, and getting back and forth from the shop is pretty easy. There are three ways to get there on pavement and a cinder bike path, all of which are relatively road bike-friendly. On a whole, Flag is a pretty safe place for bikers, but like everywhere else, you have to ride defensively. Theft isn't a huge problem--you don't need hexagonal, carbide, barrel-lock chains--but you do need to lock 'em up. Most theft is opportunistic here, someone sees an unlocked bike and takes it, but there aren't many pro bike theives. My bikes are locked with a 6' cable and a Master disc lock and it has always been adequate. Hope that helps. Looking forward to meeting you next month!
